Mardi Gras, 2015

Mardi Gras is a traditional festival of the southern United States, it is a carnival event.  The people there enjoy this celebration by going to parades where they catch "beads, doubloons, cups, and trinkets" that are all thrown from floats.

Mardi Gras consists of two parts. Mardi from Roman language "Tuesday" because Tuesday, the Romans called Dies Martis, which is the Roman god of war Mars day. Mars writing into Mardi in French. Gras is the meaning of "grand brilliant." So Mardi Gras means "grand Tuesday."

Mardi Gras means "Fat Tuesday" and of course is celebrated on that day of the week.  Mardi Gras is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.

The official colors for Mardi Gras are purple, green, and gold. These colors where chosen in 1872 by the King of Carnival, Rex. He chose these colors to stand for the following:

Purple represents justice; Green stands for faith; Gold stands for power.
