Germany, Berlin - Gendarmenmarkt

Gendarmenmarkt by the Johann Arnold Nering design, built in 1688, dating back more than 300 years of history. In 2004, the movie star Jackie Chan, starring in the movie "eighty days trip around the world", where shooting had taken to the French Cathedral (Französische Dom), and Berlin Municipal Theatre (Schauspielhaus) as the background, reproduced in the movie nineteenth-century London city scene.

Gendarmenmarkt, there are two similar shape of the church, by the German Cathedral (Deutscher Dom on the south side), French Cathedral (Französische Dom, on the north side), Berlin Municipal Theatre (Schauspielhaus, on the west side) surrounded by famous drama writer Schiller (Schiller) sculpture stands in the central square.

During World War II, Gendarmenmarkt serious damage. Located next to the plaza Memorial in Berlin - the 250th anniversary celebration of the establishment of Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, in 1950, the Plaza has been renamed the "Academy Plaza." In 1991, resumed the "Gendarmenmarkt" said.

French Cathedral (German: Französischer Dom) is a Protestant church in Berlin, Germany, is located in Gendarmenmarkt. The first part of this church was built in 1701 to 1705 by Jean Louis Cayart design, built for the Huguenots, it was from France Charenton-Saint-Maurice fled to Berlin. In 1785, Carl von Gontard rebuilt the church and built a dome-shaped tower.

The church was severely damaged in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1977 to 1988.

Although the church called "Dom", but it's not the cathedral, because never have bishops stationed here.



In the church's dome there is a viewing platform, you can watch the panorama of Berlin. In 2007, the church is closed for repairs. The church has a Huguenot museum and restaurant, and there is a beautiful pipe organ, Thomas Hawkes was in this play.
